Mire of Kearmack
The Mire
The region known as the Mire of Kearmack is a place filled with dark forests and dismal swamps, filled with spirits benevolent, malevolent and playful alike. Its inhabitants included a great many tribes, a variety of fey, and many different kinds of monsters. Its vast forests and swamps hold a host of mysteries, while the great Loch of Kearmack holds its own unique conundrums. A great many treasures and old wonders lie beneath its surface and in the swamps, waiting for someone to find them.
The northern forests hold settlements populated primarily by Elves, Gnomes, and Firbolgs, with a variety of other races making up a small percentage of the inhabitants. They are generally intolerant of outsiders, often being suspicious and wary of visitors, demanding they return whence they came. Due to the recent expansion of Kearloch, most of these forests now fall inside territory controlled by the city. As a result, the remaining inhabitants of the forests that enjoy freedom from Kearloch’s subjugation have become outright hostile to those they deem to be intruding on their land. While Kearloch has seen major expansion in size and power, the people of the Mire have gained a new strength of their own. Where before they were scattered, many communities have begun communicating and unifying against what they perceive to be an inevitable threat to their existence.
There are many villages dotted throughout the landscape in the mires, with many being a part of a makeshift alliance to defend each other when the people of Kearloch take military action against them for resources and artifacts. The warriors of the mire settlements make up some of the best guerilla fighters in the world. The elite of these warriors are known as the Mud Men, due to being covered in mud and muck for days on end when engaged in warfare.
Deep in the mires, there are walking corpses in an area surrounding an ancient ziggurat. The people of the mires occasionally journey to the ziggurat to make sacrifices to the spirits they worship. None who have ventured inside the ziggurat from its entrance, located at the top, are known to have returned.
The societies in the region are generally primitive when compared to the cities of Volandra. The one major exception, the small city of Kearloch, situated in the north of the region, bordering the mires, the forests, and the loch.
The primary languages of the Mire are Common, Elvish, Gnomish, and Sylvan, with other major languages being Primordial and Goblin.
